NESTLED IN THE FOOTHILLS OF VIRGINIA'S BLUERIDGE NOUNTAINS, IN SHENANDOAH VALLEY, AMID FARMS AND WOODLANDS, HISTORIC BATTLEFIELDS, RIVERBEDS AND SMALL STREAMS, SCENIC VISTAS AND TINY HAMLETS, LIES ONE OF MOTHER NATURE'S MOST BREATHTAKING SIGHTS OF NATURAL BEAUTY... SHENANDOAH CAVERNS... CARVED BENEATH THIS ROLLING COUNTRYSIDE, A NATURAL PHENOMENA OF LIMESTONE FORMATIONS, MILLIONS OF YEARS IN THE MAKING, AWAIT YOU IN A WONDER TO BEHOLD, TO PHOTOGRAPH AND TO REMEMBER FOREVER.

THERE'S A GOOD DEAL OF LEGEND ATTACHED TO THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE CAVERNS. THE NAME SHENANDOAH, GIVEN TO THE VALLEY, IS OF INDIAN ORIGIN, AND MEANS "DAUGHTER OF THE STARS". TRADITION HAS IT THAT THEY WERE KNOWN TO, AND USED BY, THE INDIANS THAT INHABITED THE REGION LONG BEFORE THE WHITE MAN ARRIVED. DISCOVERED IN 1884 DURING THE BUILDING OF THE VALLEY DIVISION OF THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY, THE CAVERNS WERE OPENED IN MAY 1922.

SHENANDOAH CAVERNS ARE OPEN ALL YEAR. WE HAVE AN ELEVATOR TO THE CAVERNS, AND THERE ARE NO STEPS ON THE TOURS. THE TOUR LASTS 60-70 MINUTES.
